Shanghai allowed the discharge of more than 11,000 patients who had recovered from COVID-19. And health officials stressed that they should be allowed to return home, despite the lockdown that has severely restricted people’s movement in China’s biggest city.
“We hope that their families and society will not have to worry about them or discriminate against them,” said Wu Jinglei, director of the Shanghai Health Commission.
The city of 26 million reported 1,006 infections and nearly 24,000 asymptomatic cases in the past 24 hours.
Shanghai has been in lockdown since March 28. And officials say the strict restrictions will be lifted in areas where there have been no new cases in the past 14 days, following mass testing.
The United States (US) has urged its citizens to reconsider travel plans to China due to the “unilateral enforcement” of local regulations and restrictions related to COVID-19. US officials say parents and children are at risk of being separated.
