President Joe Biden, on Tuesday (28/2), said members of the Republican faction in Congress could jeopardize the health care of millions of Americans. Biden made the remarks ahead of next week’s release of income and spending budgets as Republicans push him to negotiate spending levels.
Biden, a Democrat, speaks at a recreation center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. His remarks were part of a wider effort this week to compare his administration’s priorities with those of Republicans who have not made clear about their budget cuts.
Using earlier proposals, Biden said, Republicans may want to cut Medicaid and Obamacare benefits, as well as Social Security and Medicare.
“What are they going to cut? That’s the big question,” Biden said. “For millions of Americans, health care is a dice.”
Biden said that many Republicans were “very nice.” However, Republicans who were part of the “Make America Great Again” or MAGA movement started by former President Donald Trump have shown a willingness to cut healthcare funding and let the federal government default on its debts.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has called on the government to stay on track toward a balanced budget, but he has yet to state the outlines of what it will cut.
The president has been taking advantage of Republicans’ lack of plans to attack them, highlighting earlier proposals. Biden is scheduled to release his budget plan on March 9. He promised to slash the national debt by $2 trillion in 10 years. [ka/rs]
